Includes return travel by luxury coach, free time in St. Ives on market day and a visit to Cambridge.
St. Ives is a pleasant, ancient market town on the banks of the River Great Ouse. Famous for the Chapel on the Bridge, one of only 3 such surviving bridges in England and as being the birthplace of Oliver Cromwell, St. Ives has been a market town for almost 1,000 years. During that time, it has hosted some of the largest public markets in England and even today the town boasts a market on Mondays and Fridays. The original character of the town still remains, and the shopping centre has a good mix of independent traders and well known High Street stores. This afternoon we drive to the city of Cambridge, home to the prestigious University. Packed full of stunning architecture, the tightly packed city centre is perfect for exploring ancient colleges, cobbled streets and the picturesque ‘Backs’, where several of the colleges of the University back on to the River Cam. Visit the Fitzwilliam Museum with its collection of over half a million objects, including Ancient Egyptian artefacts, rare coins and medieval illuminated manuscripts, as well as modern and contemporary art, historic paintings and classical sculptures. Cambridge is also a shopper’s paradise, with a huge array of independent shops and boutiques side by side with all the high street favourites you would expect.
PLEASE NOTE: As coaches are not allowed in the city centre at Cambridge, we will set down and pick up at The Backs, a short walk from the city centre.
