Oakham the County Town of Rutland, is a pretty, traditional English market town. Notable attractions of the town, include the Castle, Market Place, Butter Cross and stocks, a famous old school, a magnificent 14th century church and signal box. There is also the Rutland County Museum which is free to visit and has a range of displays and exhibits celebrating rural trades and life. Oakham has many places to eat and is widely regarded as the leading gourmet centre of the region. This afternoon, we make our way to Rutland Water, created in the 1970’s by Anglian Water. At the village of Whitwell, we board the Rutland Belle and enjoy an included cream tea with freshly baked fruit scones, strawberry jam and luxury clotted cream and tea or coffee before setting off on a relaxing cruise with commentary across one of the largest artificial lakes in Europe.
